Motorcyclists Make Trips to Tennessee’s Tail of the Dragon to Ride the Road’s Curves

August 25, 2020

USA- The long and winding “Tail of the Dragon” roadway in Tennessee and North Carolina is a place many motorcyclists flock to in order to ride the many curves. Part of the draw of the road is that it has no interrupting intersections or driveways for a stretch of eleven miles meaning bikers can cruise the curves without having to stop.*

The road, officially US Route 129, and sometimes referred to in short as simply “the Dragon” is famous for motorcycle enthusiasts, but that does not mean it is without dangers. Motorcyclists have lost their lives while riding the exhilarating curves.

Within the eleven-mile stretch, there are 318 curves in the road, which run along the Great Smokey Mountains and national forest. Riders would be best to avoid sightseeing, though, as the many blind curves and cresting hills require a biker’s full attention. Taking a minute to appreciate the sights could be fatal.

A gas station at the end of the tail is the only spot to fuel up, so riders should not expect any other opportunities, and should ensure they have a full tank before heading onto the road.

For anyone who doubts the dangers posed by the twisting curvy roadway, there is a monument located at a motorcycle resort that displays a tree covered in the wreckage of many bikes that met their end on the Dragon. A sign posted on the tree serves to warn others that the road should not be underestimated.

For those who do crash on the Dragon, medical help is not going to arrive promptly. It can take over an hour for rescuers to get the injured biker to the closest hospital as the road is in a rural area with no nearby ambulances.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
