Eight People Tragically Killed in E-scooters Accidents Since 2017
USA- At least eight people have been killed in accidents that involved rentable e-scooters since 2017. The deaths are leading to some companies considering a ban on these small transportation devices.*
A recent survey indicated that people are generally unsure of the laws related to scooter riding in American cities. Consumer Reports surveyed 3,000 people around the country and found that most people are not sure how the devices are regulated.
Researchers have been working on compiling a set of data regarding fatalities caused by scooters and found eight confirmed cases. One involved a 53-year-old man who struck a tree. In another tragic incident, a five-year-old child riding with his mother fell off of a scooter and was struck by a car. In the course of one month, a twenty-year-old died in Atlanta in a scooter accident, and a 26-year-old in Nashville was killed by an SUV that struck him while he was riding.
The tragic crashes all illustrate the risks involved in these devices. Scooter companies report that only one person should be on a scooter at any given time. It is not recommended that anyone under the age of eighteen operate a scooter. Finally, companies encourage people to use helmets while riding to prevent severe head injuries.
Rather than banning the scooters, the companies are pushing cities to improve their infrastructure in order to accommodate the devices. Lime states that safety is critical to their company and that they are always working to make the use of scooters safer. In light of the tragic incidents, however, some cities are discussing a ban on e-scooters. Some critics point out that neither sidewalks nor streets are designed to accommodate this new type of transportation.
