More than 1,500 Injuries Caused by Electronic Scooters in One Year
USA- As scooter rental companies are spreading throughout the nation, injuries and fatalities associated with such devices have been increasing each year. The frequency of these injuries has caused concerns regarding whether e-scooters are actually safe for use in American cities.*
The major players in the e-scooter business have been competing to capture the market in various metropolitan areas, with Lime and Bird accounting for the largest numbers of scooters, and rideshare companies such as Uber and Lyft working to enter the business as well.
With companies working to bring e-scooters to cities, regulators are finding that they cannot catch up to the growth. As a result, safety could be sacrificed to gain quick entry onto the road. One common issue is that many people are not using helmets on e-scooters. No helmets are provided along with the rental of the scooters.
In California, the scooter company, Bird, worked to push a law in 2018 that removed any requirement that people must use a helmet while riding a scooter in the state. Scooter riders have been showing up in hospitals with a range of injuries, but it is difficult to grasp the extent of the problem.
Four confirmed fatalities are included in the list of casualties. The first of which was a 21-year-old exchange student riding a scooter in Austin when he collided with an Uber vehicle.
A spokesperson from Bird commented that the company is working to make more livable communities, reduce motor vehicle-related fatalities and reduce the impact that cars have on climate change. Bird also argued that cars are far more dangerous and lead to a much higher loss of life than do scooters.
