Motorcycle Deaths are Increasing in the State of North Carolina
CHARLOTTE, NC- Motorcycle deaths are increasing in North Carolina, according to YESWEEKLY.COM. The data comes from both AAA as well as the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Early estimates indicated that 2019 could result in the deadliest year for the state's motorcyclists. In 2018, 170 people died in motorcycle collisions in North Carolina. That number indicated a sharp spike as compared to 2018 when 141 fatalities occurred. Now officials are asking that drivers in the state act exercise more caution.
One likely reason that motorcycle fatalities are increasing is that drivers are becoming more distracted because of phones and other electronics. A spokesperson for AAA stated that even minor incidents could be devastating for those riding motorcycles.
There are many ways in which drivers can improve safety for motorcyclists and others on the road. First off, it is smart to be on the lookout for smaller vehicles. On weekends, the number of motorcyclists on the road increases, and drivers should be keeping a lookout for these road users. Drivers must remember that motorcyclists have the right to an entire lane of travel.
Driving while distracted or drunk puts everyone at risk, so AAA states that drivers should always be sober and focused on the road.
Remember that motorcycles can easily end up in a car's blind spot, so take time to really check before making a lane change. Drivers often cut into motorcyclists' paths.
As for motorcyclists, keeping headlights on, and using proper safety gear can help reduce risks to their safety. Like all road users, motorcyclists should be sober and should stay focused on riding.
