Smart Infrastructure Competition Encourages Innovative Transportation Plans

August 11, 2020

GEORGIA- writes that the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Smart Communities Challenge is awarding $100,000 grants, as well as resources to four of Georgia’s government agencies. The awards are close to two times that which previous winners received.

Clayton County, Sandy Springs, and Valdosta are three of this year’s grant recipients and will be using their funds to work on a study of street and sidewalk patterns. Savannah also won a grant for a program that is an extension of work that researchers performed in 2018 in Albany. The city will be using its data analytics program to create decision-making tools. Georgia Tech’s researchers will work alongside the winners on the various projects.

Georgia-Tech runs the competition to encourage communities to develop ways of using technology that will improve the lives of average citizens.

In Clayton County, the plan is to create a decision support system dedicated to informing officials about the best ways to improve pedestrian safety. The data collection process will be performed in part by high school students in the state, as well as by researchers affiliated with the university.

The Sandy Springs project will work to improve the efficiency of the city’s buses. In Valdosta, researchers are working to coordinate the 128 traffic signals in the city.

For the past several years, more than 1,500 people died in traffic accidents in Georgia. The numbers indicate a need for improving road safety in the state.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
