Water Slide at Universal Allegedly Responsible for Over 100 Injuries

August 03, 2020

According to an online news report published on the OrlandoSentinel.com and FoxBusiness.com, well over 100 riders sustained personal injuries while riding Universal Orlando's Volcano Bay water slide. In a recent lawsuit filed against Universal Orlando Resort, a man from New York is alleging the popular water slide injured him, resulting in the man being paralyzed from the neck down.

Universal Orlando Resort, also known as "Universal" and "Universal Orlando" is an entertainment resort complex and theme park located in Orlando, Florida. The paralyzed injured party claims that he was sliding down the Universal's Punga Racers water slide in 2019. He said he stuck a wall of water as he was attempting to exit the ride in the wading pool area. The wall of water caused his "neck to violently snap back, leaving him face down in the water and unable to move." according to the complaint. The lawsuit also asserts that if the man's family did not rush in to assist him, he would have drowned.

The court documents allege the ride has inflicted over 100 other personal injuries to riders. The lawsuit also maintains that two people hired as Safety Testers were injured on the ride during testing. According to the news stories on several news websites, the legal documents containing the personal injuries were publicly accessible from the Orange Circuit Court website until the judge in the case ordered those documents to be sealed.

According to the lawsuit, the personal injuries included scrapes, nosebleeds, concussions, whiplash, and paralysis. The injuries typically occurred when the riders were riding headfirst into the catch pools.

The water slide opened in 2017. The injured party believes that his severe injury could have been prevented because Universal noticed the risk of injuries during the ride's testing. However, the ride still opened to the public.
