Vehicle Safety Technology Could Help Drivers Avoid Danger and Road Congestion
USA - Technology that can alert drivers of dangers on the roadway is currently being tested for use. In 2019, more than 36,000 people lost their lives in car crashes in the United States.*
The technology collects data from tires, windshield wipers, the speed of vehicles, along with other important information, and shares that data with sensors on the roadway. The data taken from the passing vehicles is then used to create reports that can issue alerts and warnings to drivers on the road. The technology being tested exists in some newer cars, which will be ready to connect to such systems if they become operational.
In some instances, drivers will hear warnings of crashes before they approach the scene.
The number of roadside devices is relatively small. Currently, just 1,000 devices are active across 25 states. There are fewer than 20,000 vehicles on the road with such systems, but the goal is to drastically increase the number over the next few years.
Surveys are finding that younger people, many of whom may never have owned a car, are now looking into purchasing one for the first time. The coronavirus highlighted concerns over hygiene risks posed by public transit, leading many to opt for personal vehicles. A large number of Americans have stated that they are now less likely to use either public transit or ride-hailing services in the near future. The result could be crowded roads.
