Pedestrians and Cyclists Will Benefit from Upgrades on Crows Landing Road
MODESTO, CA - Crows Landing Road is receiving an upgrade to make it safer, according to MODBEE.COM. With a six million dollar price tag, the mile and a half long stretch will receive bike lanes running in both directions, raised medians, and flashing beacons at some crosswalks.*
Additional improvements will include better lighting, access for disabled pedestrians, and other modifications for the sidewalks.
While officials had considered widening the road to perhaps four or six lanes to accommodate more cars and trucks, officials ultimately went a different direction and chose to make the roadway more neighborhood friendly.
The road is generally considered difficult and risky to navigate by foot. Parking lots for businesses lining the road mean that cars are turning onto the road in several different spots. Cyclists are sharing lanes with cars, and the existing sidewalks are narrow. In some locations, the sidewalks are completely absent.
The state hired a Florida-based walkable streets expert to review the roadway for planning improvements. After analyzing the road, the expert called the road one of the most challenging he has come across in the nation.
Parents at a local school managed to urge some change to a crosswalk where children often must cross over five traffic lanes to get to and from their campus.
