High Numbers of Pedestrians are Dying in the United States

July 06, 2020

USA- Pedestrians are dying in high numbers throughout the United States, according to GPBNEWS.ORG. In 2018, the numbers hit their highest point in about three decades, leading to concerns over the safety of American roadways. Many of these incidents are taking place in the nation’s larger cities. Miami and Houston have seen increases in fatal pedestrian crashes.

There are signs that the roads themselves are a big part of the problem. Many cities are home to roads that were clearly designed to facilitate heavy volumes of fast-moving cars rather than pedestrians. However, the problems go beyond road design. Smartphones are leading to more distracted drivers as well as more distracted pedestrians. Larger cars, including SUVs, are now dominating the automobile market and leading to deadlier crashes involving pedestrians.

Just five states are leading the country in pedestrian deaths and, together, account for almost half of all of these tragedies. The states include Georgia, Florida, California, Texas, and Arizona, which may, in part, be experiencing these issues as a result of growing populations.

Distracted driving is undoubtedly creating dangers for anyone on the road in the country. According to reports, people are using a shocking 4,000 percent more cell phone data now than in 2008.

Pedestrian detecting technology, which is currently included in some newer vehicle models, could help curb the number of these tragic collisions. However, on average, cars being driven today are ten years old and without this data.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
