Georgia Governor Says Every Resident in the State’s Nursing Homes Has been Tested for COVID-19
SAVANNAH, GA- The Georgia Governor, Brian Kemp, said all of the state’s residents have been tested for the coronavirus, according to WTOC.COM. The state is attempting to expand testing, and while having tested all the individuals in nursing homes is an accomplishment, it does not mark the end of the struggle to contain the disease.*
Long-term care facilities have been severely impacted by the outbreak, and in the state, 45 percent of fatalities occurred in these locations. In one facility in Baxley, the majority of the residents contracted COVID-19. Out of 79 individuals at the nursing home, 54 tested positive, with twelve succumbing to the virus. The facility’s CEO released a statement explaining that a person who was infected but asymptomatic spread the disease through the vulnerable population without knowing.
Georgia’s nursing homes are not alone in their disproportionate number of fatalities. Throughout the nation, nursing facilities have been devastated by the virus. Of the over 116,000 deaths caused by COVID-19 in the United States, 40 percent, or more than 50,000 of those fatalities were people connected to long-term care facilities.
The rapid spread of the virus through nursing homes has led to criticism of the facilities, and to criticism of the government responses to the virus. Some have argued that the homes were not prepared to handle the outbreak, and lacked adequate protective policies. Others have argued that governors who ordered facilities to take in sick patients caused the virus to be introduced into facilities where it could prey on those most at risk of dying from the disease.
