World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
USA- Southernminn.com writes that the World Health Administration (WHO) and The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse began World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, designated June 15th, in order to raise public awareness about elder abuse.
Abuse of the elderly takes various forms, including physical, financial, emotional, and verbal. In many cases, the abuser is a member of the victim’s family. Those who study elder abuse believe that it is woefully underreported. In fact, estimates show that for each case that is reported, there are fourteen that are never addressed.
Given how prevalence of abuse, it is important for everyone to recognize the signs that may indicate that an elderly individual is suffering.
One common form of abuse is neglect. Elderly individuals who are neglected may not have access to medical equipment such as eyeglasses or a walker and may have poor hygiene. In some instances, the individual may also suffer from bedsores or other medical conditions that can be prevented with meaningful care.
Financial abuse could involve the caregiver taking advantage of an elderly person's financial situation. A sign of this could be a caregiver who seems especially concerned about the handling of the elderly person’s money.
