Pools Create Significant Safety Risks for Young Children
FLORIDA- Pools are a hazard for young children. In fact, children under four years old are more likely to tragically die in drownings than in any other type of accident, according to Sun-sentinel.com.*
One grieving mother is now fighting to make fences a mandatory piece of safety equipment for any home with a pool. The mother lost her fourteen-month-old son in a tragic drowning incident in her backyard pool. The woman explained that while safety equipment is considered at the time the pool is built, it is not evaluated or enforced when any property changes hands. The home that she and her husband purchased did not have the appropriate equipment. While they had contacted a fencing company, the project was postponed because of COVID-19. Before the incident took place, the toddler managed to get out of the home, his parents believe through a doggy door, and he tragically fell into the pool.
Pool safety equipment, such as fences and alarms, can prevent most of these horrible incidents. Drowning fatalities are often quiet and it only takes a moment for these life-altering events to occur.
In Florida, there are 1.1 million swimming pools. With parents now working from home and trying to manage children at the same time, the number of drownings has increased. The rate of such tragedies jumped by 70 percent in 2020 as compared to last year.
