More Pedestrians Killed in 2019 than Any Point in 30 Years

June 09, 2020

USA-  Pedestrians are being killed in higher numbers every year in the United States, and last year, more people died than at any point in the last 30 years, according to CARANDDRIVER.COM*

The fact that pedestrians are being killed so frequently is not new information. In fact, as so many people have died while walking on American roads, cities around the nation have started Vision Zero programs aimed at creating safer roadways. Despite those efforts, the numbers jumped yet again.

The Governor's Highway Safety Association (GHSA) revealed that the number of fatal pedestrian crashes is estimated to have increased by five percent in 2019. The GHSA used the numbers from the first half of the year to estimate the year-end total. If accurate, then 2019 was the deadliest year since 1988 in terms of pedestrian crashes.

These deaths are not evenly dispersed throughout all 50 states. Instead, just five states have accounted for close to half of the total number of pedestrians killed nationally. The states that top the list include Florida, Georgia, Arizona, California, and Texas. Together, these states only make up 33 percent of the population.

There are a variety of factors leading to the rise in deadly pedestrian crashes, including the increased number of people operating larger vehicles, distractions caused by cell phones, and warmer weather.

While pedestrians are facing more perilous roads, the number of other types of traffic deaths has remained steady for about ten years. Vehicle safety has helped to limit the number of occupants killed in crashes throughout the United States. In fact, 25 percent fewer vehicle occupants are dying in crashes now than in 1975.
