Georgia College Students Rally for Pedestrian Safety on Campus
MILLEDGEVILLE, GA- 13wmaz.com writes that students on campus at Georgia College are looking to have improved pedestrian safety on roads frequently used by members of the college community.*
One student began a petition requesting that the town install pedestrian warning lights. The student stated that she has witnessed people almost hit and that there are so many near misses in the area that she cannot even count them. Without appropriate lighting, drivers are often simply unable to see people walking in the area.
The petition quickly gathered support, and after just one week, more than 2,000 people had signed.
Changes are anticipated in the area following the petition. The Georgia Department of Transportation stated that they had already been putting some plans together to improve safety in the area. Some of those plans had reportedly been considered for years. One possible idea posited by GDOT is a pedestrian scramble. Pedestrian scrambles work by stopping all vehicle traffic at the same time so that people are able to cross the street in any direction, including diagonally, while the light is red for drivers.
The system was used at the University of Georgia and seems to be a successful strategy to reduce pedestrian accidents.
The students are happy that plans are being made to provide them with better protection. According to officials, some of those changes will be in place by the beginning of the next school year.
Sadly, one of the crashes that occurred in the area did result in a fatality. A student from the Georgia Military College was struck by a bus while riding a bike near campus last year.
