Dunwoody Cyclists May be Permitted on Sidewalks Throughout the City
DUNWOODY, GA- Dunwoody council is moving to allow cyclists to ride on the city's sidewalks, according to REPORTERNEWSPAPERS.NET. After holding a virtual council meeting, the alteration to the city's code seems likely to go into effect later this summer.*
While the initial thought was to permit cyclists on sidewalks on roads where the speed limit was over 25 miles per hour, some felt that that law would be too complicated and that the city would be better off just permitting bikes on every sidewalk regardless of the speed of traffic on the adjacent road.
The council discussed the speed limit restrictions due to concerns regarding bikes on streets with heavy pedestrian traffic and low-speed limits. However, many school zones drop to lower speed limits during certain hours of the day, and the result could lead to unnecessary confusion about where bikes can and cannot go.
\Some officials pointed out that bike accidents on streets with 25 miles per hour can still have devastating results. Those who support the change also point to the state's lack of adequate cycling infrastructure. Cyclists using the sidewalk still must yield to pedestrians and will be required to provide people walking on the sidewalk with a verbal notice prior to passing them.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that in 2018, 857 people were tragically killed while biking in the United States. When bikes and cars are in collisions, the cyclist is far more likely to be the one injured.
