Crashes in Construction Zone at the Interstate 16/Interstate 75 Split
MACON, GA- 13wmaz.com writes that traffic on the I-16/I-75 split is notoriously bad. The road is plagued by heavy traffic, speeding motorists, and other poor driving practices. The area is known for many car crashes and is subject to seemingly constant construction work.*
The Georgia Department of Transportation began working on construction projects in the area in 2016. However, there is some question as to whether those projects have led to an increase in crashes instead of improving the safety and efficiency of this part of the road.
One driver stated that he was involved in a chain-reaction crash at the area around the I-16/I-75 split. His vehicle and about five or six others ended up crashing off the side of the road and into a ditch. The man stated that he now avoids the road as he feels it is too dangerous.
A police officer stated that across the state, the interchange is known as being dangerous. Prior to the projects, officers were frequently called to the area to respond to these collisions. In most cases, these incidents are the result of people making minor driving errors or violations. One issue is that drivers are often improperly changing lanes or speeding. Many crashes are also rear-ended collisions caused when inattentive drivers are caught in traffic congestion.
Numbers seem to indicate that in 2019, crashes dropped in the area, likely because drivers are now aware of the large construction zone in the area and the necessity of slowing down as a result. There was, however, a spike shortly after the projects began. Officials believe that the area will be easier to navigate and safer once the projects are completed.
