National Safe Boating Week Reminds Everyone to Stay Safe on the Water
SAVANNAH, GA- Wsav.com writes that National Safe Boating Week is May 16th through May 22nd. To celebrate the beginning of the boating season, safe boating practices are being promoted around the country. The National Safe Boating Council provides information for boaters on how to keep themselves and their passengers safe.*
The first piece of advice is to always use a life jacket when boating. Many accidents that occur on the water take place quickly without any warning, which is why wearing a properly fitting jacket is a way to keep people safe in the event of an emergency. Children should never wear adult-sized life vests, nor should adults use life jackets that are intended for children. The NSBC also points out that there are different types of life jackets and that people should use the ones that are intended for the activity in which they are engaging.
Another safe boating practice is knowing the capabilities and limitations of the boat. There is a maximum number of people that most vessels can accommodate. If the boat is carrying too many individuals, it may become unstable, presenting a risk of capsizing.
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary performs safety inspections on boats at no cost to the owner. It is important to ensure that boats are in good working order before taking them out on the water.
Boat operators should also undergo a safety class on how to operate their vessels. Courses teach boat operators how to keep themselves and passengers safe, as well as how to avoid violating any boating laws. Failing to abide by boating laws can lead to expensive fines and even jail time, depending on the violation.
