COVID 19 UPDATE: Get Legal Help from the Safety of Your Home

Nursing Homes in Lakeland, Florida, Under Siege by Coronavirus

May 07, 2020

LAKELAND, Fla. — To date, fourteen residents of the Highlands Lake Center nursing home have succumbed to the novel coronavirus. Loved ones express enormous regret because facilities will not allow people in to see their family members one last time. Three additional residents of another nursing home in Lakeland have also died from COVID-19, according to The Ledger, citing statistics published by the Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office. Florida’s Department of Health reported that 62 residents of Highlands Lake Center were positive for COVID-19. Only eight of the 62 did not require hospitalization. In addition, at least 22 staff members have now tested positive for the novel coronavirus. *

Fifteen people living in nursing homes located in Polk County, Florida, succumbed to COVID-19. The state Department of Health indicates that 26 people from Polk County lost their lives due to the novel coronavirus.

The company that runs the Highlands Lake Center reported that around one-half of their clients who live at the nursing home tested positive for COVID-19. Furthermore, fifteen out of 164 employees who work at the Highlands Lake Center have tested positive for COVID-19. State health authorities report that eight residents who are positive for COVID-19 continue to live at the nursing home.

Family members of people living at the Highlands Lake Center voiced their anger about the lack of information released by the home regarding the safety of their loved ones. Family members reported that they were unaware that eight people who are positive for the novel coronavirus continue to live at the home. Concerned family members demand to know why the residents who are positive for COVID-19 still live at the home instead of being transferred until they return to health. No one from the nursing home’s administration has replied to the question.

A spokesperson from the parent company said that they are doing what they can to protect their clients’ privacy while keeping concerned families informed.
