Seven Killed by COVID-19 in Roanoke Nursing Home
ROANOKE, Va. — The South Roanoke Nursing Home, located on Franklin Road, has struggled to contain the spread of COVID-19. According to ROANOKE.com, seven residents have died from COVID-19 at the nursing home. The number of deaths, while tragic, could be worse given the number of residents and staff who have contracted the virus. A spokesperson from the nursing home told ROANOKE.com that 28 staff members are positive for COVID-19. Furthermore, three residents from the nursing home were hospitalized for treatment, and another 33 residents are receiving treatment after testing positive for COVID-19. The spokesperson for the nursing home also indicated that all seven of the residents who fell victim to COVID-19 suffered from other severe illnesses and were also in their 80s and 90s, respectively. *
The nursing home traced the outbreak of COVID-19 to a staff member who tested positive for the virus approximately two weeks ago. The administration of the nursing home began working with the local health department to separate the sickened staff member from residents and her colleagues. Shortly, two other staff members and a resident tested positive for COVID-19. The virus then spread through the nursing facility quickly.
The nursing home’s administration took steps to test all 81 residents and 100 staff members. The test results trickled in, and at least fourteen tests administered to residents were inconclusive. Retesting will occur next Monday.
Nursing home administrators said that they had done all that they could to protect residents and their employees. However, the nature of this virus makes it unpredictable because people who have the virus but display no symptoms pass the disease easily.
Although the nursing home stopped family visits, they cannot put a halt to outsiders entering the home completely. The facility houses patients who required skilled care daily. Therefore, doctors, nurses, therapists, and other medical professionals must come in to care for their patients. Although necessary, this practice jeopardizes the nursing home patients and staff.
