Nursing Home in Tucson Confirms Outbreak of Coronavirus
TUCSON, AZ- Tucson.com writes that a nursing home in Tucson has confirmed that the coronavirus has infected some of its residents and staff members. The facility, Sapphire of Tucson, has lost patients to the potentially deadly disease.*
A 33-year-old man spoke to reporters about the loss of his 64-year-old father to the coronavirus. The son lamented the fact that he was unable to say goodbye to his dying father, whose coronavirus test results did not come in until after the victim's death. For six years, the victim had lived in the facility due to a problem with his hips.
The facility's first victim was a 21-year-old man who had a movement disorder. The young man was transferred from the facility to the hospital, where he tragically died a few days later. The death was the fifth in Pima County since the start of the outbreak.
Most patients transferred to the hospital were placed on ventilators. Within a week of the first case at the home, there were 26 confirmed positive tests among the facility's residents and staff members.
One of the victims' son stated that he tried for days to get a hold of his father, and when he was not able to, he contacted the home. The staff told him that his father had been taken to the hospital two days prior. No one had informed the resident's family of his illness or transfer to the hospital. The hospital informed the son that his father was in critical condition and on a ventilator. Within hours of that, the hospital told him that his father would not last through the night. Because of the outbreak, he was not allowed to see his father in person.
Officials stated that once a case is introduced to one of these facilities, it spreads rapidly.
