Nursing Homes in Arizona Report Spikes in COVID-19 Infections

April 28, 2020

MARICOPA COUNTY, AZ- writes that nursing homes and similar facilities in Arizona have faced an increasing number of cases of the potentially deadly coronavirus. In Maricopa County, 42 facilities saw 198 confirmed cases of the virus, which represented a 200 percent increase. The respiratory disease has killed 32 people and sent 65 to the hospital.*

A representative from the Maricopa County Department of Health stated that the people in these facilities are the most vulnerable in the state. Officials will need to take steps to protect these individuals from the spread of the virus.

Many staff members at Maricopa homes have also been infected. Facilities in the county report 110 cases of the virus among workers at nursing homes. There are about 500 such facilities in the county. No deaths among the staff members have been reported at this time.

The spread of the virus in long term care facilities in the state's heavily populated counties is increasing rapidly. Still, the state's officials are not releasing the names of the facilities experiencing outbreaks of coronavirus.

A home in Tucson reported around two dozen cases a month ago, but now stated that there are twice as many cases in the facility. In total, 50 residents had tested positive, along with 24 staff members. While the facility stated that none of their staff members had died from the virus, they would not confirm whether any of the residents had died from the disease.

The virus has spread rapidly through long term care facilities across the United States, killing thousands of vulnerable residents. The number of cases has risen sharply in recent weeks.
