Dozens of Nursing Homes have Reported COVID-19 Fatalities
ALBANY, NY- Lohud.com writes that at least 42 nursing homes suffered ten or more fatalities as a result of the novel coronavirus. These facilities have faced serious outbreaks that have been devastating for the vulnerable people living in these homes. Based on new reports, downstate facilities have been facing large clusters of infection.*
The Cobble Hill Health Center has suffered the state's highest number of deaths out of all nursing home facilities in New York. The Brooklyn nursing home suffered 55 deaths based on self-reported numbers.
The list of impacted facilities does not include any facility with under five fatalities. The numbers also do not include deaths that took place after a resident left the home and was transferred to a hospital or other outside facility.
About 3,000 nursing home residents died of the virus statewide, accounting for about one out of every four deaths in the state.
Family members who have residents in the facilities often complain that they have been struggling to get information about the state of their loved ones. The governor recently signed an executive order that requires people operating in adult care facilities to notify family members of confirmed cases of the virus or deaths. The information must be relayed within 24 hours.
Public health experts have expressed concern over the lack of information coming out of these facilities because it is complicating the response to the virus. When questioned about the nursing home outbreaks, the governor stated that the homes had taken drastic measures in an effort to prevent the virus from spreading. He pointed out that the homes had not allowed visitors, and that the result of that has been very harsh on the residents. However, the virus, he said, should not be underestimated.
