Nursing Home in Dongan Hills Reports 44 Coronavirus Deaths
STATEN ISLAND, NY- Silive.com writes that 44 people died at a nursing home in Dongan Hills, according to statewide survey results. The Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center is the only facility located in Staten Island that made it onto the list.*
The facility is tied with one another for having the third-highest death toll in New York. The Cobble Hill Health Center suffered the highest death toll in the state, with 55 lives lost. Some in the state have reported the need for more protection for nursing homes.
The Department of Health stated that the list of impacted nursing homes was created by using numbers from the homes, which included presumed coronavirus fatalities. Facilities with five or fewer reported deaths were not included on the list out of concern for patient privacy.
Last month, the governor issued a statewide mandate requiring homes to take patients who had tested positive for the virus back after they were released from the hospital. Homes in the state now have only 24 hours to inform families when their relative is diagnosed with the virus or if the individual dies from COVID-19.
The company that operated the Carmel Richmond home released a statement claiming that its high numbers are in part because the facility has been doing more testing than other homes. Representatives for the company claimed that there are facilities that sent sick individuals to the hospital without testing, and have therefore given the appearance of lower numbers. One doctor stated that the home was indeed one of the few with the ability to conduct a significant number of tests.
