DuPage Nursing Home Reported 22 Cases of Coronavirus as First Outbreak in the County

April 28, 2020

CHICAGO, IL- writes that the Chateau Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Willowbrook suffered the earliest outbreak in the county of the coronavirus. The home reported in mid-March that there were 22 confirmed cases at the long-term care facility.*

The positive cases included eighteen residents and four members of the staff. The infected residents were all isolated, and the staff members were isolated in their homes. A representative of the DuPage County Health Department reported that each case leads to 90 people who could have been infected by that individual. The results mean that a large number of people will be contacted and informed of the fact that they could have contracted the virus.

Officials stated that there was more that they could and should be doing to control the spread of the virus.

The facility is now not alone in its experiences with coronavirus in the county. Twenty-one percent of the 1,349 people who died from COVID-19 in the state were those living in long-term care facilities. Fifteen of those killed were at the Covenant Living at Windsor Park in Carol Stream. In DuPage County, 90 people died from the virus, and 64 of those deaths took place at long-term care facilities.

Officials in the county point out that the elderly population is more severely impacted by the virus, and that people in long-term care facilities are some of the more at-risk individuals.

After first hitting the Chateau Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Willowbrook, the virus has infected people at 28 other nursing homes in the county. In some instances, staff members have chosen to cease working at the facilities out of concerns for their own health.
