Two Sacramento Nursing Homes Suffer 65 Cases of Coronavirus

April 28, 2020

SACRAMENTO, CA- Abc10.com writes that coronavirus outbreaks at two California nursing homes have led to at least 65 cases of the disease. The two homes, which are owned by the same company, are the Sunrise Assisted Living of Sacramento and the Sunrise Assisted Living of Fair Oaks.*

At the Sacramento facility, 25 residents have confirmed cases of the virus, along with 23 staff members. The Fair Oaks home has sixteen positive cases among residents and at least one staff member who has tested positive for the virus.

Currently, 856 cases of coronavirus are confirmed at California nursing homes. Sunrise Senior Living, which owns the two homes in Sacramento, is a Virginia-based company that owns a total of 329 facilities throughout the United States, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom.

The data collected at California homes only includes facilities that have more than six patients, and where there is a minimum of eleven confirmed cases of the virus. Small group homes and facilities with ten or fewer cases are not included in the state's statistics. The state claims that the reason for the limited data is privacy concerns.

This week, federal officials have stated their intention to begin tracking cases of the virus at these facilities, which have become the "ground zero" for the virus. The government is attempting to take a more aggressive approach to track the virus throughout the nation.

According to the governor, there are more than 8,685 facilities in the state, and those homes have the capacity for more than 300,000 patients. The staff will also need to be monitored, indicating that the task at hand is a massive one.
