Nursing Homes and COVID-19; The Virus is Killing the Nation’s Most Vulnerable
PITTSBURGH, PA- Lehighvalleylive.com writes that the coronavirus is spreading through the nation’s nursing homes. The Genesis HealthCare Brakeley Park Center is just one of the many homes that have been devastated by the deadly disease.*
The family of one resident killed by COVID-19 spoke to reporters about the tragic circumstances that led to their loved one’s death. Last year, the family moved the 90-year-old woman to the Genesis home in order to keep her closer to her family. Sadly, weeks after the victim’s 91st birthday, the coronavirus began to spread through the facility. Reports indicate 63 of the residents contracted the virus, as have fifteen staff members. Ten people have died so far.
The tragedy was one of the thousands around the nation that occurred at a nursing home or assisted living facility. Nearly half of the deaths caused by COVID-19 in Pennsylvania have occurred at nursing home facilities. These homes have started taking measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Visitors are no longer allowed to enter the homes, and staff members have their temperatures taken prior to being admitted to the facilities.
The grandson of a resident of the Brakeley Park home said that it is disgraceful that the nation has taken extreme measures in an effort to protect the most vulnerable members of the population, and yet nursing homes failed to keep these people safe.
Predictions indicate that the deaths will continue, in part because of staff shortages, which already existed but have been made worse by the virus.
While the staff at these homes struggle to care for the sick, the families say they are often unable to gain information about their loved ones’ conditions. The family of one of the victims stated that the handling of their loved one’s death left the elderly woman with no dignity.
