Federal Government Makes Plans to Share Information About Nursing Home COVID-19 Outbreak
USA- Newsmax.com writes that nursing homes around the nation are suffering severely from the outbreak of the coronavirus. Officials with the federal government are now referring to these homes as the virus’s ground zero. Now the government will be tracking the spread of the virus at these facilities in an effort to identify locations of outbreaks.*
Critics have been pushing officials to take more steps to track the virus in these facilities and to give the staff members more protective gear and access to tests. One official stated that the goal is to make the information more available to the public. The plan to disseminate this information has not yet been finalized.
While the government has not released a national tally of coronavirus deaths at nursing homes, a tally of information released from states has indicated that at least 8,426 people in such homes have died from the disease. Experts believe that even this number is far smaller than the actual number of elderly nursing home residents who have died from the virus. Many of those who passed away at such facilities were never actually tested for the disease.
Officials state that the reports could be released as early as this week, and that confirmed and suspected cases of the virus among nursing home residents and staff will be collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The facilities will also be required to inform the families of residents within twelve hours of learning of a case of the virus.
Tracking in nursing homes is important when it comes to the reopening of business in the nation because the homes serve as a predictor of infections in communities around the country. Sadly, nursing homes are often left without the necessary protective equipment for their staff.
