Police Officer in Smyrna Dies in Tragic Crash

April 26, 2020

SMYRNA, GA- Mdjonline.com writes that a police officer from the Smyrna police department was killed in a tragic car crash. A Duluth man is now facing charges in relation to the deadly incident.*

The victim was identified as a 34-year-old man. Reports indicate that the officer left behind three children and his wife. The victim worked with the department for two years as a uniformed patrol officer working the night shift. He was also a veteran of the United States Air Force and a current member of the Reserves. The Smyrna police chief stated that the officer had recently received an award for his service.

The officer was driving his patrol car in the late evening when his marked vehicle collided with a Chevrolet Tahoe. The crash reportedly took place at the intersection of Oak Drive and South Cobb. The other driver, identified as a 35-year-old man, is now facing multiple charges in relation to the crash. Police charged the man for driving under the influence and felony homicide by vehicle.

The Georgia State Patrol was handling the investigation of the collision and arrested the driver. Reports regarding the crash indicate that the officer was heading southbound on South Cobb Drive and that the Tahoe was traveling northbound on the same road. The driver in the Tahoe attempted to make a left turn onto Oak Drive and cut into the path of the officer’s car as it was traveling straight through the intersection.

The man in the Tahoe was injured in the wreck, but his injuries are not considered life-threatening. Police suspect that he was on drugs or under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred.
