Ten Dead from COVID-19 at Bartow Nursing Homes

April 26, 2020

BARTOW COUNTY, GA- The writes that the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) indicates that over 40 cases of COVID-19 have been identified in long-term care facilities across Bartow County. So far, at least ten people have died from the virus in those facilities based on data from the Bartow County Emergency Management Agency ("EMA").*

The data from both the DPH and the EMA are not consistent. The DPH currently reports that four people died from Townsend Park Health and Rehabilitation located in Cartersville and that another four died at the Maple Ridge Health Center. However, the county EMA reports that Townsend Park has lost at least six patients to the virus, which would bring the county total to at least ten.

The DPH stated that they would only be reporting cases that they have verified. The outbreaks at the homes have led to the Georgia National Guard being called in to help the facilities. The state National Guard’s Infection Team is working to clean and disinfect these facilities and to train the staff members at these locations.

Nursing homes and assisted-living facilities in Georgia have been severely impacted by the virus. COVID-19 is spreading rapidly through this vulnerable population, with the number of impacted facilities and individuals rising rapidly. The most severely impacted facility in the state is PruittHealth Palmyra.

While some people have predicted that the virus will peak in the state by late April, others point out that the predictions regarding the peak of the virus have continuously been pushed back. The second-guessing and unknowns are what some in the medical community say is most trying about handling the outbreak.
