More than 200 Nursing Homes in Georgia Report Outbreaks of COVID-19

April 26, 2020

GEORGIA- writes that more than 200 nursing homes and other long-term care facilities in the state have confirmed cases of the coronavirus. Families who have loved ones in such facilities are now looking for help as they worry about the state of these homes.*

The daughter of a 92-year-old resident of a Carrol County nursing home spoke to reporters about the concerning experience. The woman stated that her mother is on fulltime oxygen and that she is unable to check on her because of the no visitation policy. Now, she has learned that half of the residents in the home have tested positive for the virus.

According to the Georgia Department of Health, 39 residents at the Carrollton Manor Nursing Home have confirmed cases of the coronavirus. There are 80 residents in total. So far, five people in the facility have died from COVID-19. Seven members of the facility’s staff also have been diagnosed with the virus. Across the entire county, there are a little over 300 confirmed cases.

COVID-19 has spread through Georgia’s long-term care facilities, with hundreds of homes reporting positive cases. Recent reports indicate that 1,900 patients have contracted the virus in these facilities, along with 966 members of nursing home staff. At least 295 patients have died from the disease. In total, there are about 20,000 confirmed COVID-10 cases in Georgia, and the numbers from nursing homes indicate that about 3,000 of those are among this vulnerable population.

At the Carrollton Manor, a spokesperson stated that the homes have a separate wing dedicated to treating the infected patients. Any residents who test positive are moved from one wing to the other.
