COVID-19 Identified at 230 Nursing Homes in Georgia

April 26, 2020

ATLANTA, GA- 11alive.com writes that 230 nursing home facilities in Georgia have confirmed cases of COVID-19. The list includes any personal care or nursing facilities with a minimum of 25 beds where any member of the residential population or the staff tested positive for the virus.*

The governor is now sending the state’s National Guard to these homes in an effort to assess the condition of each of them and to ensure that they are rid of the outbreak. There are now 60 teams working to sanitize the facilities throughout Georgia. The National Guard is also being tasked with training the staff in such homes to implement measures that will stop the virus from spreading further.

A representative for the Georgia National Guard reports that they continue to check back with these homes when additional problems are identified. By keeping track of the facilities and their status, the National Guard can determine whether there are other services that they can provide to these homes in terms of additional training for staff or further disinfection services.

The National Guard is working in several ways to combat the spread of the virus in the state. In addition to providing help to nursing homes, the Guard has nineteen medical support teams helping at hospitals to handle COVID treatments. At 21 hospitals, service members are controlling the entry into these facilities. Service members are also at isolation sites across Georgia and helping with food delivery and distribution at ten sites.

The goal of the Georgia National Guard is to reduce the spread of the virus in the state’s nursing homes. Across the nation, nursing home facilities have been hit particularly hard by the coronavirus.
