Sixteen Test Positive for Coronavirus in Kanawha Nursing Home
CHARLESTON, WV- Wvmeteronews.com writes that sixteen residents of a nursing home in West Virginia have confirmed cases of the coronavirus. The numbers from the Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center located in Jefferson released the report just before the governor issued an executive order requiring testing at such facilities.*
The numbers indicate the biggest one-day jump in cases for the county. Of course, the virus is spreading throughout the county’s residents, not just those in nursing facilities. However, in these locations, the population is particularly vulnerable and at risk for severe consequences from the virus.
All of the 75 residents at the facility were tested for the virus, and two of the individuals are now receiving treatment in the hospital. The assisted living facilities are working together with health officials in the state. The measures that have been instituted are not enough to protect the residents of these facilities.
The governor ordered that all labs performing tests in West Virginia report the results to officials in the state and local departments.
While the number of positive results is still on the rise, many are more concerned about reopening the state for business. One mayor reported that she was against moves to open before there were improvements in testing. She pointed out that even without reopening, the state was seeing cases climb, and pointed out that reopening could lead to even more devastating results.
The concerns have been echoed by other mayors who state that despite the economic toll, the measures are necessary to protect people’s health and their lives. While the closures will lead to budget cuts and reduced spending, some officials are saying that they are unwilling to open the doors if it means putting people’s lives at risk.
