Nursing Home Residents Face Deadly Risks and Families Struggle for News
USA- Abcnews.go.com writes that the coronavirus is taking a massive toll on nursing homes and the residents in these facilities. Even during the early days of the pandemic, the Cobble Hill Health Center in Brooklyn had paramedics responding night and day. In Virginia, firefighters reported a massive increase in the number of 911 calls coming in from the Canterbury Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Henrico County. An anonymous tipster in New Jersey alerted the authorities about the Andover Subacute and Rehabilitation Center, where staff had resorted to storing a body in a shed.*
The elderly and frail residents of these facilities are being targeted by the virus, leading to a massive death toll. So far, there have been more than 7,300 people in long term care facilities that have died from the virus. Some believe that the actual number of fatalities is likely far higher. Only nineteen states are keeping data on the number of deaths at such homes.
Not only are the numbers terrifying and tragic, but they fail to tell the complete story, which involves frightened and isolated elderly residents and worried families who are unable to get information about loved ones. Relatives are left to wonder whether their family member is being protected, and the staff at the homes are often spread too thin and overworked that they cannot keep up with requests for updates.
