Florida Releases Names of Nursing Homes with Confirmed COVID-19 Cases

April 23, 2020

TALLAHASSEE, FL- Herladtribune.com writes that Florida has now released the names of nursing homes in the state that have confirmed cases of the coronavirus in their staff or residents. There are currently 303 facilities on that list, and 45 counties, out of a total of 67, have positive cases in a nursing home. Sarasota currently has ten, while Manatee has eight. The governor stated that the names of those infected would not be disclosed, only the names of the facilities.*

Nursing homes in Florida were already required to inform all staff, residents, and residents’ families if a positive case was identified in their facilities. Officials stated that they do not have evidence indicating that this was not taking place, but that they want to make sure that if there are cases, families are not going without that information.

There were 1,785 cases of the virus at nursing homes in Florida as of this week, and 175 reported fatalities at these locations. In Manatee County, there have been 417 cases, 112 of which took place at nursing homes. More than one-third of the deaths in the county were in long term care facilities.

In Sarasota County, 284 cases of the virus were identified in these facilities, including six deaths.

Statewide, there have been 26,314 confirmed cases of the virus and 764 deaths. The state is looking to reopen now, and a spokesperson for one of the facilities is pleading with officials to make sure that they were providing healthcare workers at nursing homes with the necessary equipment. The spokesperson pointed out that his staff was facing the same risks as the workers in hospitals, but were not given priority for personal protective gear such as masks or gloves.
