In LA County, 148 Nursing Homes Have Coronavirus Cases
LA COUNTY, CA- Dailybreeze.com writes that in California, 261 facilities have reported cases of the coronavirus among their residents or staff. There are 1,224 facilities in the state, and in Los Angeles County, 148 facilities have confirmed cases of the virus.*
Facilities between Los Angeles and Yucaipa had some of the highest numbers of the virus, but representatives of these facilities mostly declined to comment.
At the Briar Oak facility in Los Angeles, there were 142 confirmed cases of the virus, which are the most at any nursing facility in the area.
A spokesperson for the facility stated that their concern is to take care of their patients and that the staff is working 24 hours a day to keep residents and the staff safe. Currently, residents are being screened three times every day, and staff members are screened each time they enter the facility and are instructed to cancel any doctor’s appointments for themselves unless they were essential such as chemotherapy or dialysis. The spokesperson also claimed that the facility has been open with the residents, staff, and the families of residents about the status at the home.
Another facility, Broadway at the Sea, which is located in Long Beach, has 40 cases, and a spokesperson for that home stated that they are working with state and local officials on a plan and new coronavirus protocols.
The director of public health for the county expressed concern over the high number of deaths. The county is requesting additional aid from the state and the federal government to address the continuing rise in cases.
In addition to Los Angeles County, multiple homes in Riverside County, San Bernardino County, Orange County, and San Diego County all have confirmed cases of the virus.
