Another 125 Cases of the Coronavirus Reported at Nursing Homes in New Jersey

April 23, 2020

NEW JERSEY- Nj.com writes that the death toll from coronavirus at New Jersey nursing homes continues to rise. Another 125 deaths were reported at facilities from the virus. The state has considered dispatching the National Guard in an effort to help the facilities cope with the massive outbreaks.*

Throughout New Jersey, there have been at least 10,163 confirmed cases of COVID-19 at long-term care facilities in the state, and so far, at least 1,655 people in such facilities died from the disease. There are 413 nursing homes, veteran homes, or other similar types of facilities in the state.

The most recent 125 cases account for about half of the state’s new coronavirus fatalities. Overall, New Jersey has 81,420 confirmed cases of COVID-19, and about twelve percent of those cases are at long-term care facilities. Of the 4,070 deaths, 41 percent have taken place at nursing homes and similar facilities, even though these individuals only make up about small percent of the overall population in the state.

The issue has been gaining attention in the media following the discovery of seventeen dead bodies in a nursing home located in Sussex County. An anonymous tip led investigators to the location where another 38 people have since died. The owner of the facility has faced citations in response to the situation and the handling of the deadly outbreak.

A new plan is being enacted to control the spread of the virus and the response. Some of the plans include an onsite infection prevention specialist, an administrative manager, and a chief nurse. A survey recently found the facility lacking in health-related care for residents.
