Coronavirus Tragically Kills Five at Nursing Home in Lincoln Park
CHICAGO, IL - The chicago.suntimes.com writes that four residents of the St. Mary’s Home, a Lincoln Park nursing home, died from the coronavirus. Six more residents tested positive as have four staff members. A spokesperson for the facility reported that three women and one man died all during the same week at the home.*
The organization that owns the home, the Little Sisters of the Poor, stated that the ill residents are being cared for in the facility, as none are sick enough to be transferred to the intensive care unit. The facility has 50 independent living apartments and 76 beds.
In mid-March, St. Mary’s went on lockdown and stopped serving communal meals. Residents now dine in their own rooms.
Nursing homes around the nation have been hit hard by the coronavirus. About twenty percent of the victims killed by the virus have been residents of nursing homes or similar types of facilities. More than 7,000 people in these locations have lost their lives. According to the governor, around 300 people have died from the virus in nursing homes in Illinois. About 50 percent of the homes in the state have confirmed cases of the virus. Social distancing is difficult for the facilities to accomplish because of the close living arrangements. While visitors are not allowed, the staff can bring in the virus, as can vendors.
