Employee Reports Nursing Home Keeps Staff “In the Dark” About Positive COVID-19 Tests

April 27, 2020

MUNCIE, Ind. — Officially, three residents of the Liberty Village nursing home located in Muncie, Indiana, tragically died from complications stemming from the COVID-19 infection. One member of the staff, who wished to remain anonymous due to the fear of retribution, claims that two other people have died. Still, the facility will not identify the deceased, according to an article appearing in The Star Press. The anonymous employee also stated that the nursing home administrators purposely denied testing so that the overall number of infections would remain low, and so staff would continue to show up to work.

The Delaware County healthcare official said that a specialized team of healthcare professionals from the Indiana Department of Health tested all of the residents living in the nursing home for COVID-19. The specialized team also quarantined all of the patients positive for COVID-19 in one wing of the facility.

Administrators from the nursing home reported they initiated the call to the state Department of Health to test symptomatic residents. It is reported that only five residents could receive tests due to the shortage of testing equipment. The administrators from the nursing home went on to say that they hired a laboratory to test all remaining residents.

Overall, 126 positive COVID-19 cases have emerged in Delaware County nursing homes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recognize the potential devastation the outbreak can cause to the residents of nursing homes. The CDC stated that facilities must act quickly and decisively to protect residents, staff, and family members.
