Nursing Homes in Mercer County, NJ Hit Hard by Coronavirus

May 11, 2020

MERCER COUNTY, N.J. — At least one resident in thirteen Mercer County, N.J. nursing homes has reported a death due to the coronavirus. Nursing homes and long-term care facilities denied or ignored repeated requests for information coming from patients’ families, employees, and the patients themselves. Consequently, the New Jersey Department of Health had to intervene and warn the facilities about their reporting duties.*

Mercer County, N.J. has a large population of senior residents. Over 15 percent of the county’s 367,000 residents are 65-years-of-age or older.

Astoundingly, 40 percent of the 122 coronavirus deaths were from a nursing home or long-term care facility. The Patch also reported that 419 confirmed coronavirus victims were either a member of the staff or a resident at a nursing home. Forty-nine of those who contracted the virus out of the 419 nursing home cases tragically died.

A Mercer County executive expressed concern about the health of his residents. The executive commented that the local stakeholders had informed the governor of New Jersey about the high rate of infection in Mercer County nursing homes.
