Elder Care Patients and Staff Are 20 Percent of All COVID-19 Fatalities in Florida
STUART, Fla. — Recently released statistics paint a gruesome picture of life in elder care and nursing facilities in Florida. One out of five people who died from COVID-19 in Florida was either a staff member or a resident in an elder care or nursing facility. According to a report in the TCPalm.COM, 1,400 people living or working in long-term care nursing facilities in Florida have tested positive for the COVID-19 infection. Tragically, 126 people out of the 1,400 infected have passed away. Now, elder advocates want Florida’s governor to release the names of the facilities with infections so that people are held accountable for making eldercare living centers healthy places to live. *
State legislators in Florida asked the governor to release the names of contaminated nursing facilities to help others. They argue that transparency is the most important factor in maintaining accountability. The lawmakers from Florida said that they need the information so they can protect the folks who live in the facilities and protect the people who work in them. The governor’s office released only statistics instead of names of the contaminated facilities due to privacy concerns.
While the spread of the deadly infection has shown signs of slowing recently, the opposite is true for nursing homes. The number of COVID-19 infections has doubled in Palm County nursing homes and long-term care homes. The number of positive coronavirus tests in Florida rose by 3.3 percent day-to-day. Remarkably, the number of confirmed cases in nursing homes rose by 4.7 percent in one day.
The COVID-19 infection can spread through a nursing home rapidly. The administration running every elder care facility in Florida must take every precaution to prevent the spread of infection.
