Nursing Home Tells Man his Mother is “Fine,” He Learns She Died Hours Later From COVID-19

April 21, 2020

NEW YORK, NY- The writes that a man says that he contacted the nursing home his mother was living in and attempted to learn about her condition after suspecting that she had contracted the coronavirus. The Haym Saloman Home for Nursing and Rehabilitation informed the man that his 74-year-old mother was “fine.”*

The man called multiple times looking for an update on her condition but was eventually told that she had died, likely from the virus. The facility indicated that she had been in an ambulance that was transporting her to the Maimonides Medical Center when she passed away.

The grieving son stated that he spoke with nurses the earlier on the day of her death, and was informed that she was fine. A rabbi informed the man’s family that several people in the home had died from the virus. The son stated that he had contacted the home to discuss the outbreak and what their plans were to protect the residents. The facility had offered reassurance, stating that the home was on lockdown and that they were handling the situation. In a matter of one week, his mother was dead.

The victim was recovering from brain cancer and had developed a cough. The man stated that he attempted to email the nurses and was informed that they were out sick. He was unable to get anyone to answer the phone. The victim’s son-in-law also attempted to get news of the woman’s condition only to be told by a frazzled staffer that he was the only person tending to 38 residents.

The virus killed 2,400 people in nursing homes in New York so far, 390 of the victims died in Brooklyn.
