Nursing Homes Suffer More than 5,500 Fatalities From Coronavirus

April 21, 2020

USA- writes that the coronavirus is hitting nursing homes with particular viciousness as it spreads throughout the nation. The number of fatalities from long-term care facilities is now more than 5,670, indicating a jump of more than double in the matter of a week. In New York, more than two percent of the state’s nursing home residents died from the virus.*

So far, 3,466 facilities located across 39 states have known infections. The numbers indicate an increase of almost 1,000 facilities as compared to a week ago.

While the numbers are high, many suspect that they are not even close to the real death toll at these facilities. Nursing home deaths are not tracked by any federal government agency, and some states, including Florida, have not disclosed the information while others simply lack the tests required to determine how many have been infected or died from the virus.

In New York, more than 3,000 people in nursing homes died from COVID-19, indicating 2.3 percent of the around 131,000 people in the state living in nursing homes have died from the virus. In New Jersey, over 95 percent of facilities have seen cases, and the number of deaths increased by five times over a matter of just over a week. Massachusetts lost 444 people so far and has outbreaks in 214 facilities.

While the number of deaths continues to rise, the federal government, many states, and the facilities themselves are facing criticism for their lack of transparency. People in the industry are saying that it is important to track the spread of the virus and that this cannot be done without proper reporting of cases and deaths.
