An Outbreak of COVID-19 at East Alabama Nursing Home Kills Seven

April 21, 2020

ALABAMA- writes that an Alabama nursing home suffered an outbreak of the coronavirus that infected at least 79 individuals and killed seven. The Arbor Springs Health and Rehab Center, located in Opelika, is one of Alabama’s largest nursing homes.*

A spokesperson for the facility stated that they had begun taking precautions to limit the spread of the virus before the state had a confirmed case of COVID-19. The facility claims that it closed off the home to visitors, and limited the contact between residents prior to the state requiring such measures. The virus has proven to be particularly dangerous to the elderly.

Late last month, one resident and one employee received positive coronavirus test results. The government then took steps to determine how many people in the facility had contracted the virus. A total of 56 people tested positive for the disease, and many of them were hospitalized due to severe symptoms. About fifteen people who tested positive never presented symptoms of the virus. Nine people who tested positive for COVID-19 died, but two of those fatalities were said to be unrelated to the virus. Three of the victims were in hospice prior to the outbreak.

Many employees were also tested, with 23 confirmed cases. Nine of the staff members who contracted the virus have since recovered. The spokesperson stated that the facility is working to keep the families informed while they work to control the outbreak.

According to the New York Times, 6,900 people have died in nursing homes nationwide as a result of the coronavirus. Overall, about one in five deaths associated with the disease has taken place at a nursing home, or in connection to a nursing home or similar facility.
