Nursing Home in Park Ridge Suffers Devastating Outbreak of Coronavirus

April 21, 2020

PARK RIDGE, NJ- Northjersey.com writes that a massive outbreak of the coronavirus has killed about 25 percent of the residents of a Park Ridge nursing home. Another 22 people so far have tested positive at the facility, with some now having been transferred to another facility as the epidemic threatens the vulnerable population.*

Out of those who died, only nineteen had confirmed test results. Now many of those who were ill have been taken to a Livingston facility where only patients with COVID-19 are receiving care. The workers at the facility are struggling to handle the virus, with 25 employees having tested positive for the coronavirus, and 57 that are displaying symptoms. One woman stated that her mother died at the facility just days after developing a cough. The facility had refused to test the 87-year-old for COVID-19.

The Paramus Veterans Home lost 37 veterans to the virus prompting the Army National Guard to send in combat medics to the facility. The Governor now says that the state will be investigating nursing homes that have had particularly high proportions of their populations die during the outbreak. Disturbing reports came from the largest long-term care facility in the state where seventeen bodies were discovered in a makeshift morgue.

Family members of residents spoke about the strain on the staff, which they say are not given access to masks and gowns as they work in twelve or fourteen-hour shifts in a highly stressful environment. The virus ran rapidly through the nursing homes in the state, killing many people before tests were available to confirm that those individuals were positive for COVID-19. Healthcare workers have been exposed in many places as well due to a lack of sufficient protective equipment.
