Almost All Residents at Belmont Manor Nursing Home Tested Positive for Coronavirus
MASSACHUSETTS- Wbur.com writes that by the end of March, the Belmont Manor nursing home had a confirmed case of coronavirus in one of its residents. The 135-bed nursing home then experienced an outbreak in its population that has killed 30 people and infected another 86. Additional residents are still waiting for test results to confirm whether they have the disease as well.*
The death toll spiked by more than double in a matter of just five days. The family-owned facility released a statement claiming that they had taken every possible step they could to stop the spread and that the team is devastated by the loss of so many of its residents. Out of the employees, 59 out of 190 individuals also tested positive for the virus. Not all of the employees have been tested at this point.
The virus has proven particularly devastating for older adults, who often have other unrelated health conditions. Currently, 37 percent of people who tested positive for the virus are age 60 or over, and most of the deaths have been of people in their 70s or older. This week there have been 222 facilities with at least one confirmed case of the virus, and 530 people in those facilities have died from the disease.
While the National Guard has been called in to conduct tests in the state, the number of available tests is not meeting the demand. Testing is incredibly important not only to ensure the patients receive treatment but also to isolate those individuals and to gain valuable information about the locations of the outbreaks.
