Coronavirus Leaves Twelve Dead at Milford Nursing Home
SUSSEX COUNTY, DE- Delmarvanow.com writes that twelve people have died at one nursing home facility in Sussex County as COVID-19 spreads through the nation. The disease has proven particularly deadly for older individuals, and residential facilities have been some of the hardest hit by the virus.*
The Milford Center lost twelve residents and confirmed that 61 residents tested positive or have presumed cases for the coronavirus, along with thirteen staff members. The death rate for residents in the facility who are believed to have contracted the virus is almost twenty percent. So far, 30 residents are now considered stable and are no longer exhibiting symptoms of the virus.
Another five people died at the Atlantic Shores Rehabilitation and Health Center, and a facility that has not yet been named reported one fatality from the virus this week.
Nationally, around 2,300 nursing home facilities reported cases of COVID-19, and an analysis published by USA TODAY stated that there had been over 3,000 deaths in those homes.
Health officials state that the virus is a difficult one for these locations because the symptoms often take weeks to present, and by the time someone tests positive for the disease, many people have likely been exposed. The Governor responded to the outbreak at these long-term care facilities by implementing new safety requirements. Those new standards include the need to assign specific staff to provide care for residents suspected to or known to have the virus, to create a designated location for residents with the virus, and to designate a place for newly admitted residents where they will be observed for fourteen days to check for signs of the virus.
