Nursing Home in Portland Loses Fourteen Patients to COVID-19 as State Identifies Violations
PORTLAND, OR- Oregonlive.com writes that a nursing home in Southeast Portland has reported fourteen fatal cases of the coronavirus. Now the facility, the Healthcare at Foster Creek, is being investigated for potential violations that led to the rapid spread of the virus through their population.*
Reports indicate that workers at the nursing home were not washing their hands, only were issued one mask per each shift, and did not receive adequate training on how to prevent the spread of the virus. The home is now the largest cluster of fatal cases in the state, and 50 people, including residents and staff, have contracted the coronavirus.
A three-day inspection was initiated by the Department of Human Services on the same day that reports indicated that ten people in the facility had died from the virus within two weeks of the facility’s first reported case. In a matter of days, four more residents of the home died.
The inspection led to findings of multiple violations. The Department of Human Services reports that the nursing home did not take the necessary measures to prevent the virus from spreading and that the failure created an immediate risk to its residents’ safety and health.
A nurse who was working at the facility stated that she had to use the same mask for one and a half weeks, even though she was working with more than twenty patients who had confirmed cases or were showing symptoms of COVID-19. She has now tested positive for the virus. The licensed nurse stated that she was handed a mask and informed that she would not receive another one, so she should not throw it away. The woman also stated that workers were caring for those with the virus, and those who did not have the virus and using the same masks the entire time.
