Nursing Home in California Under Investigation After Deadly Coronavirus Outbreak
ALMEDA COUNTY, CA- Foxnews.com writes that an outbreak of coronavirus in California led to at least thirteen fatalities at a nursing home. In addition to the deaths, dozens of residents were confirmed to have contracted the virus and became ill.*
The Gateway Rehabilitation and Care Center located in Haywood, California, is being investigated by the Alameda County District Attorney. After 67 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed, the facility and several others have been targeted for probes.
The District Attorney stated that while these situations are complicated due to the many people in these facilities that are already suffering from poor health, the state is looking into such outbreaks and taking them seriously.
As the virus has spread throughout the nation, nursing homes have presented particular concerns. In San Bernardino County, more than 50 people had confirmed cases of the virus in just one facility as of early April. Around 30 cases were identified at a separate location in the southern part of the state, including both residents and members of that facility’s staff.
Nationally, nursing homes are providing care for around 1.4 million individuals, many of whom are severely disabled. Facilities have been prohibiting visitors from entering the homes in an effort to prevent the spread of the virus and isolated residents living within the facilities. There are no more common activities, and meals are being served to individuals in their rooms.
Relatives who lost family members at the Gateway Care & Rehabilitation Center complained that the staff had not been using masks. The County’s Public Health department expressed concern over such reports.
California has 27,098 confirmed cases of the virus statewide, and 890 or more fatalities.
