Florida Nursing Homes Are Infested with COVID-19

April 21, 2020

PALM COUNTY, Fla. — One out of every five people who died from COVID-19 in Florida was either living in or working in a nursing home according to the TC Palm. Spurred on by the grotesque discovery of a nursing home in New Jersey that housed seventeen deceased residents stacked up in a small morgue, elder care advocates asked Florida’s governor to identify all of the eldercare facilities where someone died from COVID-19. The governor of Florida denied the request. Instead, the governor released statistics showing that 1,400 long-term care facility residents contracted COVID-19, and 126 people have died. *

State leaders asked the governor of Florida to release specific information about the death toll attributed to COVID-19 and to identify the facilities contaminated by the novel coronavirus. Advocates called for transparency. They said that transparency is vitally important to protecting Florida’s residents, especially those who live in long-term facilities and who are more vulnerable than others to suffering severe adverse health consequences or dying from the coronavirus.

Residents of long-term healthcare facilities such as nursing homes and rehabilitation centers are prone to contracting infectious diseases due to the close proximity to each other in which the residents live. Furthermore, the age and general health condition of the nursing home population contribute to the escalation of the COVID-19 infection rate. The rate of infection increased in Florida by 3.3 percent between Tuesday and Wednesday in mid-April. During that same span, the infection rate increased by 4.7 percent in the same 24 hours.
