Nursing Home in California Under Criminal Investigation Because of High Number of Coronavirus Deaths

April 19, 2020

HAYWARD, CA. — The prosecuting authority from Alameda County opened an investigation into a nursing facility because thirteen residents died from the novel coronavirus. The Alameda County district attorney said that the Gateway Care and Rehabilitation Center is under investigation for a large number of deaths. Additional, one family is pursuing legal action of a woman who died from COVID-19 and lived at the nursing home. According to an article from the Patch of Castro Valley, CA, the investigation could include probing elder abuse allegations, criminal negligence, or involuntary manslaughter charges because of the conditions in the facility. *

Simply because COVID-19 is hard to stop does not mean that nursing homes and other medical facilities remain blameless if people succumb to the infection if they because ill due to the negligence or recklessness of the facility. Nursing homes must perform all steps necessary to protect their residents.

COVID-19 ran rampant in the Gateway Care and Rehabilitation Center. In addition to the thirteen residents who lost their lives to COVID-19 infection, 41 other residents fell ill, along with 26 members of the staff. Public health authorities are rightly concerned about the outbreak in this one nursing home. One local public health official said that authorities are working closely with state public health officials along with hospital personnel to control the spread of the disease and save as many lives as possible. According to reports, troubling questions remain concerning the outbreak at the Gateway Care and Rehabilitation Center. Whether charges are filed remains to be seen.
